Oeshiki Festival at Hommonji Temple, Tokyo: October 11th – 13th
Over 300,000 worshippers arrive to the Buddhist ceremony in memory of High Priest Nichiren, so you can just imagine the energy and intensity of the place during the festival. 3,000 participants take part in the parade on the evening of the 12th, carrying lanterns and huge paper decorations to Honmonji Temple. The participants chant and pray to the traditional tunes of Japanese drums and flutes. The parade that starts at Ikegami Station and proceeds to Ikegami Honmon Temple is highly recommended.
Getting there: About 10 minutes walk from Ikegami Station on the Tokyu Ikegami Line, or about 8 minutes walk from Nishimagome Station on the Toei Subway Asakusa Line.

Every year, cinema lovers of all ages have an opportunity to participate in Tokyo’s Film Festivals’ many colorful events.
The event includes open-air screenings, seminars, symposiums and public appearances by stars throughout the city. The Tokyo International Film Festival (T.I.F.F.) was approved by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPH), and has been held since 1985. It is recognized as one of the major film festivals of the world.

Nagasaki Kunchi Festival: October 7th-9th 2018
Not exactly in Tokyo, but one of Japan’s Largest Festivals and worth looking into. Having originated in 1634, the Nagasaki Festival is based at Suwa Shrine and other locations in the city. The festival sees fifty nine separate neighborhood performance groups putting on unique traditional performances in traditional garb. The freshness of the acts is guaranteed by the fact that each group can only perform once every seven years on a rotational basis. The dragon dance and parade float are among the highlights.
Hours: Morning ‘til night
Getting there: JR Nagasaki Station is just under two hours away from JR Hakata Station, Kyushu’s main bullet train hub, on Kamome Limited Express 47. Hakata can of course be reached in about 5.5 hours from Tokyo Station by Nozomi Shinkansen (Bullet Train). Alternately, direct flights operate from Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
